invisible email

I've spent hours reading and troubleshooting (to the best of my ability) my "disappearing" email messages.  Emails disappear quickly from my inbox and other folders so these folders appear to be empty.  I realize this is a common problem but I have not been able to resolve mine.  When I use the search feature I can see that the emails are there, somewhere, but as soon as I remove the word in the search box (like "com") the email folder is again empty.  This problem exists in Mailboxes, On My Mac, and Icloud folders.

What I have tried:

-rebuilding each folder with Mailbox -> rebuild (did nothing though I can see it rebuilding the folder)

-I tried filtering my Inbox from Mail to an “inbox” folder I created On My Mac thinking they would be saved locally and left alone but this did not work.  They transferred then “disappeared”.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

note that my emails have also stopped showing up on my iphone

Have you tried talking to your email service provider.   They may have changed their settings for one reason or another.   Most providers are very helpful.
