Major repair 5 months out of warranty

Anyone know where I can write or call to see if there is any hope getting the warranty extended to cover my 17 month old macbook pro that just randomly developed a $500 hardware issue?  Not sure it's worth it to pay to get it repaired.  My first Mac experience not the best...I guess i should go back to pc?
