Quick punch is not recording

I've just installed Logic X (10.3.2) on my brand new iMac. Currently recording my first project – when I attempt to punch in during playback, the playhead turns red, playback continues..but nothing records. I have ticked 'Allow quick punch in', but it has made no difference whatsoever.

Is there something I'm missing? Is it a bug? Is it a hardware issue? I'm fuming to say the least...
