Messages on my Mac is suddenly inactive and I c...

Suddenly today I can't send or receive messages in the Message app on my MBP running Sierra. It says the account is not active and gives me a dialog to sign in.

But when I enter my Apple ID and password after a while it says unable to authenticate. I'm able to send and receive messages on my iPhone and iPad.

And I can sign in to icloud.com on my Mac, the app store, and also these forums with the same Apple ID and password.

Any idea what might be wrong with Messages?
