do i need an iphone to get ipad on the internet?

Hi folks , Intro is I am a fairly savvy guy on my mac but the whole iphone /smaaat phone craze eludes me. Punch 7 buttons & talk , the simplicty could only be advanced by hitting one button to make your call ...which we've done. That said I do like Face time , internet-on-the-go etc. without lugging the notebook looking like a library nerd.....(70's guy , we hid notebooks if we carried them!) Does the ipad support internet use WITHOUT the **** iphone , can you use it AS a phone???? I know this may sound very simple but no matter who I ask I cannot seem to get a straight forward answer, pLease be detailed as I am familiar with desktop macs but know nothing about ipads or how they communicate with a home computer~

I figured I'd throw this up for other folks , I just called Apple and they said the models that come with "cellular" you can take to your carrier to be sync'd and your set .....no iphone needed , not apple id only , regular cell service. It is or can now be a phone.

You do not need an iPhone to access the internet on an iPad.

You cannot use it as a phone, but you can get on the internet.

but it has face time .......how does that work .....facetime is a phone call with video??? Or will facetime only work if you have an iphone?? See my frustation??

FaceTime can make audio or video calls to other Apple devices.

So buying a "cellular" version does not mean you can make cellular calls UNLESS YOU HAVE AN I PHONE Arrrrrgh!

Did you ask then how this can be done?

They said it comes with it's ownn simm card just like a cell phone , how it's activated at my carrier I have no idea , sounded like when you take it to your carrier they will assign your existing cell # to the ipads simm  , and she did say I would have to bring it to my carrier.

Did they tell you how to get around the fact that iPads do not have phone software, how did they suggest that you dial a number, or hang up a call (if you find a way to make one)
