Trying to reduce iCloud storage, syncing to iTu...
I have an iPad3 (64GB) and am trying to reduce the storage which is synced to iCloud, as my account runs out at the end of the month. I have 20GB account backup in iCloud now, but want to use the free 5MB account. I have turned off Camera Roll (15.9GB) and iPhoto (13.6GB) backups, but kept the rest of my apps on.
I have synced my iPad with my MacBook into itunes so everything is backed up on the computer. In doing this, I discovered that the largest part of storage is my Apps: 18.7GB according to the bar at the bottom of iTunes. I include my storage bar from iTunes below.
If I look at the list of Apps in the App pane of the iTunes sync, the highest usage ones are 809 MB, 585 MB, 386 MB, 325 MB, 287 MB, and then the sizes go rapidly down from there, and if you add all my apps together they come up to just under 6GB. iPhoto only has 134.6 MB so I don't think it could be that, but either something is using a lot of hidden storage, or... what? I don't have a lot stored in Dropbox, or my printer utility either. By far the largest usage on the iPad is my photos, but as you can see they only account for 2.9 GB and I am not including them in the back up sync.
I have also run out of space enough to back up my iPad via iCloud, even with the Camera Roll and iPhoto backups turned off. Manage Storage says the next backup size for the iPad is 15.2 GB. I can delete that backup as I feel safe enough that I have backed everything up, but still I am using a little more than 17GB of my 25 in my iCloud account, and 15GB of this is from the iPad.
I will want to turn the iPad backup back on once I have solved this problem, but am afraid that once I reduce my iCloud account to the free 5 GB, my iPad backup won't be able to done automatically to iCloud because again it will be too large because of the size of the Apps Capacity as shown in iTunes.
What can I do to reduce this hidden storage problem from my Apps, as it does not appear that deleting the highest usage apps will solve my problem?
Thank you very much. I am grateful for any help or tips you can give me.
After rereading the posts from all you good people on related storage issues, and experimenting on my part I have come to the following conclusions:
1. The apps somehow take up more room on my iPad than is stated in iTunes, and even after deleting some of the larger and less used apps I only freed up 1 GB of space. There must be some sort of hidden memory usage by the iPad of information from apps. Since purchased Apps are free in iCloud storage, this must happen internally to the app and be out of Apple's ability to calculate in Manage Storage. I lose nothing in deleting apps since I backed up to my computer and they are still all available on the computer.
2. Since my App usage is greater than my actual backup to iCloud, and I have no wish to delete further Apps, I need to purchase the minimum backup storage on iCloud that is needed to back up my iPad using the iCloud. I do want to use ICloud to back up the iPad, so this seems to be my only option.
3. Since I am a photographer, and use my iPad to store my photos temporarily, linking Camera Roll and iPhoto to the iCloud just uses up huge amounts of iCloud back up space needlessly, since all those photos will be manually backed up to my hard drive later. I will try the Photo Stream and see if that helps make this easier, since the Photo Stream is free.
4. I also freed up about 1.8 GB of storage by deleting a lot of old mail, but that thousands of emails for very little gain.
I hope this helps someone, and thank you for all the helpful discussion threads which helped me manage and understand iPad and iCloud storage.
I don't need so much of storage space. Please reduce it so that only have to pay 0.99 cents per month-
Thanks.
