After upgrading to Sierra, and now High Sierra,...

Saving Drafts Apple Mail Version 11-0 3445-1-6.png

Last year I upgraded to macOS Sierra and more recently, macOS High Sierra. Now my Apple Mail (Version 11.0, 3445.1.6) always reports at the bottom of the folders column that it's "Saving x of x thousand drafts," now "886.7 MB" (see illustration).

I can't find these drafts but even if I could, I would prefer they not be saved in the first place.  I've tried reassigning drafts -- I don't even remember creating this many -- to various Drafts folders (e.g., as in the illustration, under an email account or under On My Mac), but nothing new shows up these folders, just the one or two drafts I'm actually working on at the time.

Is the "Saving Drafts" message just a spurious bug?  Or are thousands of email drafts invisibly bouncing around my Macbook Pro?  And how can I fix this anomaly?  Thanks for your help.
