Can I backup my Mac to iCloud and if so, how?

I need to reformat my Mac, and my external drive has taken a dump. Can I back up to iCloud?

No. Apple does not offer iCloud backup for Macs. There are 3rd party services -- I use Mozy as a secondary backup of my data because I want the additional protection of having something offsite in case of fire or theft, but I wouldn't recommend that or any other for your immediate plan.

Apple does offer ability of Macs to sync selected things to iCloud (Desktop, Documents, iCloud Photo Library, etc) but that isn't going to meet the needs of your reformat and restore.

My suggestion is to get an external disk drive and use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create a bootable clone of your disk drive.

This will provide you with the fastest method to restore everything to your new disk drive while you are booted from the clone.

AS Allan suggests a clone is the easiesr/fastest way to go:

SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.
