how do i sync iMessage on my phone and macbook air

imessage on my phone and macbook air used to be synced, in that all of the messages either sent or recieved would show up on both my iphone 5s and my macbook, in the last week this hasnt happened though and the messages only show up on one or ther other; if my computer is on they only show up on there but if its off they will come to my phone, how can i get them to sync again to make then come up on both??

Hi bec1993,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

I believe there may be an issue revolving around the Apple iD or the iMessaging accounts being used on your iPhone and MacBook Air.

In order for iMessages to sync between iOS devices they need to use the same Apple iD. This basically will link all your iOS devices in n Apple ecosystem where they will all be synced across all your iOS devices.

The first thing to do is check if the iMessaging accounts are using the same Apple iD:

To do this first on the Mac go to the application Messages:

          1.          Click messages from the menu bar at the top of the screen

          2.          Click Preferences

          3.          Click Accounts, from here you will see all the places where you are getting messages to your MacBook.

          4.          Look at all the accounts where the iMessaging description is/the accounts that are sending and receiving iMessages on your MacBook Air. They all have iMessage in the description below the address

Now go to your iPhone:

          1.          Go to settings

          2.          Scroll down to Messages

          3.          Make sure that iMessage is turned on

          4.          Then go to Send and Receive and click this

          5.          Make sure that the Apple iD at the top of the screen matches address that was found in Step 4 of the first part and make sure they match up and are identical.

If they aren't - you can change the wrong one and this with fix your problem and have the messages resyncing again.

If they are the same and still not syncing, simply log out of the accounts on both sign out in the preferences on Messages OS X and log out in Messages iOS and then reenter your details in both correctly.

I hope this helps and please keep be posted as to if you succeed.

Many Thanks

Hi Bec1998,

It is always better to do things a second time, if it fails the first time.

Hi, its not working again? :/ i have no idea why its doing it, my computer has been on the whole time but it just keeps dropping out again??

Hi Bec1993,

Sorry about the name in the last one! It was a complete typo Sorry.

It may be a case of the messages sent from one device to someone are not being defaulted sent from iMessage to check this:

          1.          Settings

          2.          Messages

          3.          Click on Send and Receive, see when the sending address is, this may be not be the same as your mac

Similarly do the same on your Mac:

          1.          Message App

          2.          Messages

          3.          Preferences

          4.          Accounts

          5.          Start a new conversation from

What you may find is that iMessage is on both devices, yet someone does not have iMessage so messages that are sent on phone are not synced to Mac

What do you mean by it's not working again?

Do you mean that it is not syncing together at the same time?

What I would do is sign out of all and sign in on all then restart/turn off and turn back on both devices?

Do not worry if they are not syncing straight away, they might take 5sec to sync from Mac to Phone, however if you message someone on your iPhone, who is not on iMessage it will not appear on your Mac. Similarly if you are messaging from your Mac through messages but not iMessage i.e. FaceBook, Google, this will not appear on your phone.

Many Thanks and I look forward to hearinf from you again!

I don't have a problem with the messages syncing across my IPAD/IPHONE/MacPro. I do have a problem when I delete a message on one of the devices, they do not delete on the other devices? I am running IOS 8 and Yosemite

I have a similar problem.  Messages sync fine between iPad and iPhone, but only some of them appear on the mac. All are running the latest software.  I used to get a message on the mac that there was a call on the iPhone - no more.  I tried turning it all off and on, no help.

HI there, I have this issue since I have updated phone and mac computer. The phone has a different ID account than the computer. I don't know how to change the account to the correct one. It says to log out an log back in...I don't know how to do that. Can you help. The phone is on the gmail account and the computer is on the sbcglobal.net account. Can you help me? Thank you, Sherri

Hi again. I was able to log in and out...but when I see the accounts listed on my phone it does not have the main account. I don't know how to add it to my phone or take away any others. I never use gmail or cloud or me accounts...only sbcglobal.net....but it is not there...What has happened since the update...?? Thank you for your help!
