ipad pro locked as mislaid passcode and connecting it to itunes it is again asking for passcode even though it had on previous occasions been linked

You need to restore it following the instructions in this support document. If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support  If you are seeing it ask for passcode, then you are not getting it into Recovery Mode. Try again.
