FaceTime crashes with Sierra 10.12.4

Facetime quit unexpectedly

on my MacBook Air (Mid 2011) with Sierra 10.12.4 FaceTime crashes during opening with the "quit unexpectedly" error.   FaceTime is version 3.0.  My system is completely up to date.

I have tried restarting and shutting down the computer with no effect.

I have ~20GB of free HDD space.  FaceTime operates normally on my iPad and iPhone.

Hello johnnybarcelona,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that the FaceTime app won't successfully launch on your MacBook Air. You've done a great job so far. I'm happy to help.

First, I recommend testing this issue in safe mode. Starting up in safe mode will allow your Mac to clear cache, run certain checks, and prevent login items from launching. This can help isolate possible third party issues. Follow the steps in the link below:
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the behavior persists, test the issue in another user account on the Mac. Testing in another user account determine if the issue is user specific or system wide.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Please keep us posted on your results.

Have a great day!

Hi Chris

Thanks for your help with this.

I started in safe mode and FaceTime still crashed upon startup.

I logged in to another user account and FaceTime seemed to work fine.

Cheers

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.FaceTime.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Thanks for your help Eric

I did the plist work as suggested.  After the restart FaceTime was more stable to begin with.  I made a call on Face Time to test it and it worked fine.  After I hung up the call Face Time crashed as it had before and it is now as unstable as it was before the plist work - so I put the original plist back as you instructed.  Still no joy.

Any other ideas?

Cheers.

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
