Frequent kernel gpu panics

Been experiencing gpu kernel panics a lot over the past few days.

Here's the latest one... what next? (Mid-2010 MBP, MacOS 10.12.5)

Your MacBookPro6,2 was the subject of an extended warranty for that problem, which has now expired.

There are no parts available, and no authorized service options.

That Mac model had some units ship with a faulty Nvidia graphics card.

The fault appeared to some in Snow Leopard, but some didn't see it until they upgraded the OS.

The fault is generally triggered when it switches graphics cards.

Your kernel panic looks like the ones that have that problem.

For Apple to diagnose it, they have to run the Video Switching Test (VST).

You could try uninstalling the Intel HAXEM kernel extension and see if it helps.

If you do have the faulty card, gfxCardStatus can limit the switching and thus the panics. I don't know if it works with later OS's. https://gfx.io/

Thanks, John. Looks like I'll be perusing the refurb list "real soon now." I got 7 years of reliable service out of my MBP... can't expect much more, I guess.

Barney: gfxstatus has not seemed to have an effect on the problem... but its last update was in 2012, so... guess I can run it up to local genius bar but I'm not dropping any coin into fixing this. Sad day...

FWIW... I think, though it's only a suspicion at this point, that MS OneNote may have something to do with it. Not going to open that app and see if the panics still occur.

But there are other apps that have crashed the system... Android SDK Device Monitor, for example. I can run OneNote on my decrepit Win10 box... I can even run the Android SDK on that box too... but it's ten years old and maxes out with 4GB's RAM. So the word "slow" comes to mind.

If you are seriously interested in pursuing a repair, look into "PowerBook Medic". They advertise flat rate repair options at prices that seem too good to be true.

I had them perform some work in the past. They were reputable, but I have no experience with that exact model Mac.

I don't want to drop any money into this MBP... sigh... it needs a new battery, that's $100... and I don't see any graphics parts on the powerbook medic site. Though they'll give me $202 for it. That would be better than me giving them $202 to have it fixed, if it can be "fixed."

All that said, thank you, John, for recommending Powerbook Medic. They may be involved in my last days with it. ;-)

The problematic GPU for which the "gfxCardStatus" workaround would be applicable generates a panic report different than the one you posted, so I do not believe you will find a software fix. I'd ask PowerBook Medic if they can repair your logic board. Give them the serial number, and they'll know. As I wrote their advertised prices seem too good to be true. Of course, they may just refuse to service it.

I've fixed them myself, and it didn't cost me a thing, but repairing that model is ridiculously tedious and not something I would be willing to do with someone else's Mac. Certainly not for as little as PowerBook Medic's fees, anyway. Besides, posting a repair description on this site would result in it getting immediately and deservedly removed.

Just sent Powerbook Medics a request for a repair quote. Will update with their response.

It would be great if they can fix it for a reasonable price; I really like the laptop. I got it with 8GB RAM and a 500GB 7200rpm hd. Not as fast as an SSD, to be sure, but def faster than a 5400rpm drive.

Fingers crossed!

Got the repair estimate... 500 and small change. Won't be dropping 5 bills into this MBP...

That said, thanks again, John, for your guidance in this issue; much appreciated!

Best,

Lang

Ouch. Oh well.

I agree with you. If you want to replace it and save a few bucks, consider Apple's Special Deals page. Check it often since their inventory changes frequently.

I am a frequent visitor to the Refurb/Clearance pages. Seems like I've narrowed my gpu kernel panics down to MS OneNote. Haven't opened it for two days and haven't had a single panic. Time'll tell, I guess... and if it is the root cause, it doesn't make me happy because I use OneNote to track my activities at work... started a thread in MS Office forum and they had me do a bunch of stuff, to no avail, apparently... but my MBP is chugging along quite nicely if I don't open OneNote. Such is life, eh?

That's really odd. I have no idea what MS could possibly be doing to cause a GPU panic, but you can't argue with success.

Onenote has been squirrely for some time... often stopped responding, requiring a force quit. The frequent panics started last week... I have no concrete proof that Onenote is the culprit, but going on third day without any panics and no OneNote.

It is an energy hog... and on macs, all files are stored in OneDrive. How any of that might impact the gpu is beyond me. I do know it uses the discrete graphics chip. I guess I could use gfx to see if other app's require the discrete chip.

What kills me is MS updated Mac and iOS versions of OneNote but have not upgraded the Win10 version. And jst to confuse things more... Win10 comes with it's own version of OneNote... separate and distinct from OneNote that comes with Office. Right now I have 2 versions of OneNote on my Win10 box... Win10 version and Office 2013 version. Yipes!

Anyway, TMI, i'm sure...
