Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

SIgned,

YoseMighty Slow

It also looks like perhaps you just enabled FileVault 2, and it's currently encrypting your disk? This will definitely slow things down a LOT on a conventional (i.e. non-SSD hard drive). When that's done, things will speed up.

Have you run any cleaning or optimizing apps either prior or after upgrading to Yosemite? How about anti virus softare, any installed?

The only thing I ran was ACLr8?  Other than that, I haven't loaded Or used anything else.  Here are my stats:

MBP 13" mid 2012

8G memory

552G free storage.

what do you think?

What did ACLr8 report when you ran it?  Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.

Problem description:

MacBook Pro (mid 2012) is running super slow since I upgraded to Yosemite.  Used CleanMyMac2 and freed up 22G.  Verified and repaired disk permissions.  Re-installed Yosemite and still, it is running dead slow.  Windows take between 45-60 seconds to open, files are slow to appear…generally just slow and unresponsive.

Here's the culprit:

  [

loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.diskSpaceWatcher.plist Support

  [loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.scheduledScan.plist Support

Uninstall cleanmymac2 according to the developer instructions: How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of ....

Then to confirm that all of the files have been removed download and run Find Any File to search for any files with "the application's' name"  and the "developer's name" in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac2 you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains "cleanmymac2"

2 - Name contains "macpaw"

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Hi!  OK, I followed all of the instructions and there is still one file I can't get rid of.  It is located in a private/var/run file:  com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.socket.

And I'm still running at a snail's pace.

It also looks like perhaps you just enabled FileVault 2, and it's currently encrypting your disk? This will definitely slow things down a LOT on a conventional (i.e. non-SSD hard drive). When that's done, things will speed up.

William is right about File Vault.

For the other file try to drag it directly from the FAF search results window to the Trash bin.  You'll be asked to enter your Admin password.  See if that will work.

This is probably the main issue.  Is there anyway to stop the encryption?  I tried to turn it off, but it said I can't while its encrypting.  The estimating time remaining thing hasn't estimated the time and this issue has been going on for 2 full days.

No, you can't really stop it, because then it would have to decrypt the entire thing, which may take longer than finishing it off.

Any sense of how long this may take?  I had a sneaking feeling I shouldn't have answered "yes" to that when I upgraded.  Dagnabbit!

It's hard to say exactly. It only took me an hour or so to enable FileVault, but I've always used machines with SSDs and I've always done it early when there was like 50 GB or less of data on the drive.

You could open a terminal window and type (or just paste this):

diskutil cs list

And you should get some data on the progress. And maybe the Security system preference pane will tell you how far along things are?

Hi William, I followed your instructions and it says it is only 19% complete?   There has to be something wrong, do you think?

Hey guys!
I am experiencing very similar problems...

My MacBook Air (mid 2013, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD,...) has become very slow compared to a few days ago on Mavericks!

Also:
+ The fan is running much more often now

+ MacBook gets very warm

+ Battery drain is extremely high

+ Animations and scrolling inside OS not fluent anymore

What I already tried:

+ new install

+ verify disk permissions

+ SMC-Reset

+ PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)

Here comes my report, I really hope anyone can help me with that.

I am really disappointed of Apple... What a let down!
