Doubts about Logic Pro X performance on Sierra
I've seen that some users have problems when working with Logic Pro X on macOS Sierra. Should I update my iMac to macOS Sierra, or should I keep OS X El Capitan?
Specs:
-iMac 21.5-inch Late 2009
-8 GB RAM (4 cards of 2 GB each, 1067 MHz DDR3)
-Intel Core 2 Duo (double core) 3.06 GHz
-NVIDIA GeForce 9400 (256 MB VRAM)
-OS Version: 10.11.2
Logic Pro Version: 10.2.4
Are you using Logic regularly?
Is it working well for you?
What is in Sierra that you absolutely need?
If using Logic is important to you, answer is obvious... how long has Sierra been out?
Isn't it too early to tell?
What is it with this upgrading madness.

Logic Users, Stop Mindlessly Upgrading the OS
After what you said, I thought about Sierra and decided not to upgrade my OS; since, despite being an attractive update, there is nothing that I absolutely need, because I only use my iMac for music production and school stuff, and I have a Windows laptop for everything else. Maybe I'll upgrade to macOS when it's proven that Logic Pro X has no issues.
Anyways, thank you for your reply.
Check out the forums in a couple of weeks... that should give you an indication of any major problems.
I know it's tempting to upgrade but every OS upgrade has diminished Logic's efficiency slightly, and this is a big OS upgrade that uses more disk space, memory and resources. You have to make sure that every important application you use and every hardware device that uses drivers can handle the upgrade. Many audio interfaces haven't been Sierra certified yet.
It's really a matter of priorities... If music/music production is important, you don't do anything to sabotage what is working well at the moment.
I'd say no. I'm one of the "mad" users who upgraded only to find that Logic Pro X chokes regularly, even with larger buffer sizes. Fortunately, I run LPX on another machine so it's a minor inconvenience, but all-in-all, I'd wait ...
Correction, I meant smaller buffer sizes. Apologies!
To anyone even contemplating switching to macOS Sierra using Logic Pro for a living..
DO NOT UPDATE !!!!!
A world of hassle is awaiting you. And the performance of Logic is literally worse than 6 years ago.
A monster set back. I have spent the better 2 weeks getting it up and running and now that I have I am soooo disappointed with the snappy Logic I had on EL Capitan. It feels like molasses - slow and I have to up the buffers and what not...
macOS Sierra is a nice OS. But with anything relating to high performance this OS is a NO GO. It will slow down anything from Audio to Video - and that Significantly !
Wait at least until 1 quarter of 2017 until you update and make SURE that ALL your needed 3rd pty. plugs are Compatible !
Hi Studio Engineer
thank you
A friend of mine is just about to buy a new Apple computer with pre installed Logic, this will have Sierra on of course.
Does this mean he will have problems?
I am really worried about, as he is spending a lot of money just to use Logic.
Any advice?
This will definitively have problems. I would tell your friend to demand EL Capitan to be installed on it. Later when Sierra is ready for prime time as well as everyone else he can upgrade at his leisure.
Not sure if that is possible though. I hope he can get it done.
GOOD NEWS!
For your info, I was in The Regent Street Apple store yesterday, they confirmed that LOGIC PRO X works with Sierra!
No more worries!
And you believed them? That's the company line, you have experienced users here telling you that while yes, it may work, it doesn't work very well. Ask one of the Apple employees to run you through the Pros and Cons of Logic and you will find maybe one in 100 that knows a little bit about Logic.
There's a reason that many who work professionally use older operating systems, they are more efficient and stable for real-time work.
Thank you Pancenter
I did doubt them to be honest, so I asked anothet Apple worker, he also reassured me!
Crazy. I will never trust them again!
Thank you for your afvice, apologies for being so gullable!
Here's the thing... Logic was not developed by Apple, Logic was originally programmed and distributed by eMagic, up until the last version which was 5.51 running on Intel PC's under Microsoft Windows. I purchased Logic at a MIDI only version 2.2. Logic was the end product in a long line of development that included Scoretrack on the Commodore 64 and Creator/Notator on the AtariST. Logic was originally cross platform and enjoyed success on both the Mac and PC. There was a German "one better" competition going on between emagic's Logic and Steinberg's Cubase. Credit has to be given to Steinberg for two major developments that changed sequencing as we know it. 1. ASIO, a low latency driver model that made real-time effects and performance possible. And 2. VST (virtual studio technology) a software environment that allowed the use and development of Native effects and Virtual Synthesizers. When Apple purchased Logic they wrote their own versions of ASIO/VST... and simply gave it a different name. Basically they ripped off the basic idea, however, Core, MIDI and AU have fallen behind and are barely developed anymore.
Apple generally advises users to visit this forum for questions they can't answer. Users who stretch Logic to it's limits with have answers that no database can provide.
here's Logic on the PC version 5.51, can you tell it's Logic? "old screen grabs"
Do not update to Sierra if you use Logic, I learned this the hard way, can't use any Plugin Alliance plugins, Waves and Izotope plugins cause Logic crashes. There are no updates last I checked for any of those to solve the problem, you will deal with constant crashes and wasted time if you posses an extensive plugin library. Just wait until updates come, this OSX update added nothing useful your phone won't already have and has caused at least me personally, TONS of annoying issues and crashes. I wish my Time Machine would let me go back but it won't. Apple needs to fix this ****, I've honestly thinking of making FL Studio and Ableton my two primary DAWs because of this.
With all due respect that logic is nonsense. You made a illogical move to Sierra and now are thinking of jumping ship to other DAWs because of your stress?
So what happens when there is a new OS like Windows 10.8675309 and you decide to early adopt again?
Can we just al use some common sense and stay rationale?
