out of order external displays on MBP running 1...

I have two external displays connected to my TouchBar 15" MBP running 10.12.6 via USB-C to DisplayPort adapters. I have all three displays configured the way I like them - arrangement, resolution, desktop background, and that's been working fine for about a week. Today when I woke my MBP from sleep, the background picture on the two external displays were swapped, and the Safari windows (the only windows that I had open at the time) were also swapped and resized to a much smaller window size. It seems that OS X decided to swap my two desktops completely except for the arrangement, i.e. moving the mouse across the displays did the right thing, I didn't need to re-do the arrangement of the displays to make the cursor track properly. I haven't seen this problem on this particular MBP before, and prior to using the USB-C to DP adapters, I was using two USB-C -> MDP -> Apple dual link DVI adapters -> 30" Cinema displays which all worked fine over the past 8 months that I was using that hardware configuration.

The other issue that I see when using external displays with the MBP is that when waking from sleep, the OS will frequently not see the external displays for a short period of time and start rendering windows on the built-in display, which causes those windows to be incorrectly sized. Then when the OS sees the external displays, the windows get moved to the correct display (except in the case above) but they are the wrong size - they are sized for the Retina display. This occurs no matter what type of external display I use and no matter what type of display adapter I use, and it also occurs on another MBP that uses an LG USB-C display and a Dell HDMI display.

It's frustrating because one of the primary benefits of having multiple external hi-res displays is that I can create desktop arrangements that suit the way I work, and having to manually go in and fiddle with things when the system decides to forget the previous  configuration is a waste of time
