Winclone 6 is it viable ?
I have a MacPro and have loaded Win 10 under Bootcamp, I backed up with winclone 6 and I have had a need to regress to an earlier version. It is not restoring some images properly and will not read others at all & it has removed the label of the bootcamp partition.Has anyone else had this scale of problem? I haven't heard from Winclone support yet (contacted them last night) Is there a viable alternative to backing up Windows in Bootcamp other than this package?
I would advise steering clear of the various Windows tools as they do not understand Mac partitioning schemes.
I have used WinClone5 to successfully migrate Windows7 from one Mac to another, this does not sound exactly your requirement but is similar enough.
The process basically boiled down to -
- In my case I needed first to do SysPrep in Windows to make the copy of Windows 'portable'
- Boot in to OS X
- Run WinClone and make a backup
- Switch to new drive (in my case), use Boot Camp Assistant to make a new empty Boot Camp partition
- Run WinClone and restore backup
- Boot from the restored Windows i.e. Boot Camp partition
- Re-enter Windows serial number
- Re-install drivers as needed (SysPrep returns it to a generic configuration)
I did however encounter a Windows related problem that meant it was not as smooth as the above. For some reason in my case the Windows registry was still pointing to unique UUID drive values for the old drive, as a result it was giving a spurious error saying 'AutoChk program could not be found'. In order to solve this I had to boot in to the Windows repair option and do the steps described here - windows 7 - Missing autochk program during boot - Super User
I did try various other methods to try and 'clone' my Boot Camp partition from the old Mac mini to the new one but none of the other methods worked and WinClone after solving the above issue was the one that succeeded.
Note: WinClone also took care of both converting the Boot Camp partition from FAT32 to NTFS, and also took care of resizing the restored backup to fit the new and bigger Boot Camp partition.
You can rename the Boot Camp partition in Windows once your successfully booted.
If your restoring to the same Mac as the backup was made on then you should not need to do SysPrep.
