Time Capsule connection to Gateway Max

I have just installed a new Gateway Max for better internet connection and am having trouble connecting my Time Capsule to it.  I have connected the TC to the Gateway via Ethernet but am getting a flashing yellow light as it cannot find the network. I am using an iMac 5k with Mac OS Sierra. Should I still be using the TC (2013) as a router with this new modem?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Your modem is already a router.. and unfortunately it just happens to be 10.0.0.138 which is the IP Telstra use on their products since time began (and Alcatel produced the first ADSL modem ever). Technicolor who bought up Thomson who bought up speedtouch who bought up Alcatel long ago moved to a different IP setup.. but Telstra doesn't believe it necessary to retrain technicians.. heck they trained them 30years ago when they still had tradeschool.. why retrain them.. then you could not sack them and employ them back as contractors and make them train themselves.

Sorry that got diverted.. the router having a 10.x.x.x address means the TC will not work in router mode with default IP.

So you need to reset your TC to factory and start over. The TC should be in bridge mode. . then everything might almost work except for Sierra being a pain as well.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.

Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.

4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.

Many thanks for your help!

I have successfully reset the TC and completed the setup wizard.

The TC now has a green light and I can see the new network in the Wi-Fi menu.  I cannot see the TC in the Finder window as I used to though.  I'm not very good with computers (which is why I changed to Apple) so Steps 3 and 4 make no sense to me.

Do I need to use the new TC network or the Telstra one?  Note that Telstra has given me a 4GHz and a 5GHz Network Name.  I am currently using the 4GHz.

I did check that the Router Mode is - Off (Bridge Mode)

You are 75% of the way there..

If the LED is green on the TC it is working correctly in the network.

Now you just need to help Finder find it.

My point 4 above is essential.

You set link-local only on the computer networking preferences.. so just open the wireless configuration and change the IPv6 setup from auto to link-local only.

Note I am doing this on EL Capo so Sierra might change something.

In Finder preferences do you have shared turned on?

This means you can actually see the network shares.. if it is not turned on you cannot see them.

With Shared turned on if the TC doesn't show up then use top menu Go, Go to Server.

But there also could be a connect under the search in the top right corner of Finder.. both should take you to the same place.

In the Server Address you can type the name or the IP address of the TC. In your case you should type the name.. until you give it a fixed IP. Here is mine.

Yours will go something like

SMB://TCname.local

(where you replace TCname with the actual network name of the TC.. and .local is default domain although that may or may not be necessary.. )

Once the computer finds the TC you will be asked the password.. type in the password you set and please also check to save this in your keychain so you don't need to type this in daily.

In Sierra however you will still have to connect each time by confirmation of the action.

Do I need to use the new TC network or the Telstra one?

It is always best to use the TC network.. that will give you a more reliable setup.

Note that Telstra has given me a 4GHz and a 5GHz Network Name.  I am currently using the 4GHz.

The two bands are 2.4ghz (not 4ghz) and 5ghz.. just to be clear.

The TC has the same two bands.. and is better if you can connect to the 5ghz.. it is much faster. But if you used the same name for both bands that is fine.. the computer will automatically connect and we can worry about that later.

I should have asked but is your broadband cable, ADSL or NBN? If NBN are you on Fibre to the Premises.. ie FTTP or FTTN, ie you have a phone line plugged into the Gateway Max for connection.

This is just to make sure I understand the whole setup and is not super important.. it is just Telstra names everything the same.

Once you do all that you can then setup Time Machine again..

I presume most of this exercise is so you can do backups to the Time Capsule or are you storing files on the TC?

What exactly are you using the TC for?

I have set link-local and have sharing turned on in Finder.  I have connected to the server however, it didn't ask me for the password?

I can now use the TC wi-fi and see the TC in the finder window.  When I try to connect to it though it says it is 'Not Connected'.  We have broadband cable (used for Foxtel) and this is what the Gateway is connected to.  I use the TC for backing up my computer and storing files however, after all this I think it might be easier to store my files on a hard drive.  I have always had trouble accessing them on the TC and never really understood why we used it.

When you say I can setup Time Machine again.  Why?  Do you mean reset it again?

Apologies for what are probably very silly questions.

Thanks again!

When you say I can setup Time Machine again.  Why?  Do you mean reset it again?

If you followed all my instructions the Time Capsule now has a different name..

If it has a different name Time Machine no longer is setup correctly because it has the old TC name and will not be able to connect to it.

So in Time Machine preferences.. do the setup again.. choose the new name for the TC as the target device to backup to and start a backup.

If you did not put in a password then TC will not have connection and so you get Not Connected..

You MUST put in the password to get access to the TC over the network.

Please start all over again.

Reset the TC to factory.

Please give the TC a new name and new password.. do not use the old one.. I want you to force it to connect.

Make sure the computer is plugged directly to the TC .. or using the TC wireless .. do NOT use the gateway max.. that will block the connection.

Attempt again to mount the disk in Finder.. it MUST ask you for the password.. type in the password and store it in keychain. You should then be able to access the files on the TC.

I use the TC for backing up my computer and storing files

Many people make the mistake of storing files inside the Time Machine sparsebundle.. this is wrong.

You must store the files directly into a folder you create in the TC under data. There is a possibility you will not be able to access your files if they are stored in the sparsebundle.

I think it might be easier to store my files on a hard drive.  I have always had trouble accessing them on the TC and never really understood why we used it.

Since you are running a desktop Mac.. I think you will do a lot better buying a large USB 3 external hard disk and plug it directly into the USB behind the Mac and sit the unit there.. it will be invisible in the case of a portable drive and near to invisible in the case of standard 3.5" drive. Far far easier, faster and more reliable. You can do both Time Machine backups to one partition of the drive and store files on another.. although you should make sure you have those files on another disk. Get a friend to help you if you cannot follow the instructions.. Or even pay a technician.. I know it is uncool to not do your own setups and networking but I tell people to think of it as a washing machine gone faulty.. to fix it you call a washing machine repairer.. rather than break out the tool kit.. !!

Is the procedure the same for NBN FTTB connection and TG799vac modem. TC is green and OK but still no internet connection. Do I need to have the modem bridged. Have also seen suggestions to turn wifi off on the modem.
