Virus or malware from zipped pages file?

I am a college instructor and I have had a student submit an assignment through Blackboard which was written in Pages. However, unlike other times this has happened with other students, the file was zipped. I have a hunch that this student was hoping that I worked on a PC and could not open the file to buy them more time but the whole situation has me worried. I have:

- Scanned the Zipped and unzipped file with Avast and received no results

- Run malwarebytes with no results

- Created my own pages document to compare file sizes (the difference was between 5-10 bytes)

Am I worrying over a lazy student or is there something more that I should be worrying about? Any help would greatly put me at ease.
