Ipad locked screen

I attempted to update itunes on my ipad. itunes said it could not. I attempted to restore it. itunes said it could not. I now have a screen that shows (support.apple.com/ipad/restore) with a pic of the charge cable pointing to the itunes logo in the center of the screen. I have restarted it numerous times using all the recommended procedures to no avail. Any ideas?
