Incorrect emails being received on my imac

I am receiving emails correctly on my iphone, but often the email is incorrect when received on the mail app on my imac. I am using an imac mid 2010, with OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6. When the email comes through incorrectly, it comes through either as an old email, as chunks of code, or as a mixture of the correct email and an old one. Although this has been happening for months now, it has only affected three email accounts that are on a particular server, but tonight it has happened with my yahoo email account too. The guy who runs our server looked into this and rebooted the mail app (sorry to show my ignorance with the technical side of things, but something to do with an envelope index?), but this hasn't worked. Has anyone else experienced this please? Thank you.
