iMac 24" early 2009 slow

My IMac is slow, and when I tried to update OSX from Mountain Lion to El Capitan, it went into black screen, and was very hard to get to a point where I could reinstall from TimeMachine. But at last I managed to reinstall.

 

My question is, would a solution be to make a clean install of El Capitan (I want it to work better with other Apple products using Sierra and IOS 11, so Mountain Lion is not good anymore). Is the hardware good enough to have "a life" with El Capitan, or do I have to stick to Mountain Lion and not be able to share stuff to my other platforms?
