Thunderbolt 3 ports have different specs?

Hello.

Goofy question - but I am a goofy dude:

This past weekend I needed to record an audio project using my 2107 MacBook Pro with a FocusRite Clarett 4pre (via a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 dongle).

After several minutes of trying to connect the two - I became tired and gave up on it.

The project I was responsible for mold to my home studio, and all was well from that point on...

After the project was complete, I began to try and figure out what the problem was.  Surely it could NOT be either unit...they are both brand new.   So, the first thought was to use different Thunderbolt ports on the MB.

VOILA!!

Turns out there is only (1) thunderbolt port that I can use with this audio interface.

My question to y'all is this:  why is that the case, and is my MB somehow broken?
