Unusual issue with audio

I primarily use my MacBook Pro (2017, space grey) to create and edit videos. I generally use headphones so I don't disturb my surroundings. Normally, everything works fine. However, I ran into an unusual (and rather startling) problem.

Over the course of a few hours, I had plugged in and unplugged my headphones a few times. Most recently, when I unplugged them to watch (and listen) to the video I made, the computer started spewing weird frequencies, tones, and basically garbage sound in general. This startled me.

Plugged the headphones back in, back to normal. Restarted the computer, back to normal.

This has happened on my Late 2013 MBP as well, and a restart fixes it.

Any idea what's happening? My first instinct is to mute the sound and restart the machine, although a more permanent fix would be greatly appreciated.

If you were doing anything that records or samples the built-in (or other) microphone and monitors the sound  via System audio... that may well be the reason, if the respective input & output levels are high enough.

For example : QuickTime Player - File - New Screen (or Audio) Recording:  If the volume slider at the bottom of the recording window is high enough, you may well get 'feedback' if the speakers are used, rather than headphones.

I don't believe so. I wasn't using a microphone at all, and the volume levels were set relatively low. Changing the volume did nothing, I had to do a full restart for everything to go back to normal.

As a reminder, this happened when playing a video, not recording audio. The "feedback" was way more than what you're probably describing; it was full-on static and unusually-pitched sounds.
