Why is my MBP sound suddenly so low?

Hello everyone, I have been enjoying my Macbook Pro for 3 years now with no problems, until a couple of days ago the sound volume suddenly is half, or less, what is used to be, on iTunes, YouTube, any program you can name.  Usually I listen on about a 2 or 3 'notch' setting, now I have to crank the volume all the way up to the max just to get it to previous listening levels.  I usually use headphones but it doesn't seem to make any difference whether I'm using headphone or the built-in speakers, the volume is the same.  I have tried resetting the VRAM, playing with the Audio Midi program, etc. Nothing seems to work.  Any ideas as to what is going on, and what to do to fix it?

Check System Preferences > Sound > Output

Make sure the correct device is selected.

Or, might be a corrupted sound preference ...

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the followin:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemsound.plist

Click Go then move the com.apple.systemsound.plist file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac. See if that made a difference.

Her Carolyn thanks for taking time to respond to my question/problem.  I tried both your suggestions, but no improvement.  Any other ideas?  I'm at my wits end. 

This is an update for anyone interested who can help.  This is weird.  I'm listening to iTunes, right? with the sound preference panel open in the window.  with the headphone jack out, sound plays through the speakers and the slider at the bottom of the window, the arrow is not quite at the second notch/dash on the left side, okay? plug the headphones in the slider goes almost to the max volume, but actual sound volume coming through the headphones is the same.  I now suspect something odd is going on with the headphone jack/port.  But what to do to fix it, I have no idea.
