''Backup iPhone external HD with Mac OS Sierra''

Hi,

How can I make a backup of my iPhone on an external HD with iTunes?

I believe this is the definite article on the subject of iPhone backup.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

iCloud is typically too small to back up everything from your entire phone, use the section about using iTunes.

On the other hand, iTunes will usually be happy to do that backup, and your external drive may or may not be chosen automatically. The size of the backup may be overwhelming for iCloud, but is nearly negligible for your Mac, which has so much more storage available.

The problem is my Mac book pro doesn't have enough space on internal hd. I wish to make the backup on external drive. So the storage of the backup isn't om my Mac book but on the external hd? Do you know how to install this in iTunes?

If you do not have room to backup your iPhone, you have a much more serious problem than it appears.

You need to make some decisions about where to store additional data going forward, because it certainly is not going to get smaller. If your Mac cannot find about 9GB or storage available at startup, it will not start up any more. This is more than just an embarrassment.

If the biggest data item is in fact your iTunes Library, that can be move to an external drive using this guide:

Manage and back up your iTunes media library - Apple Support

.

Not sure if you've solved your problem already, but since I just had the same problem I will share the solution.

You may want to read this article, the solution is there with one caveat. The main thing you need to do is first copy your existing backup to your external hard drive and later you want to create a symlink that will tell iTunes where to find that backup with this command typed in terminal: ln -s /Volumes/YourExternalDriveName/PathToBackupFolder ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/. Obviously you should put your own hdd and folder names there. And close your iTunes.

One small thing that I had to adjust was the fact that this command created a symlink inside a Backup folder, so what you need to do is to rename your existing Backup folder in MobileSync location to something like OldBackup, and then move the symlink from OldBackup folder to MobileSync location. After this little maneuver and restarting iTunes it will most likely see the backup location as external hard drive. You can check it by going to iTunes - Preferences - Devices and then right click on a backup and Show in finder. It should open the external drive location, not MobileSync folder, if everything's done correctly.

Hi, I noticed that iTunes (v 12.7.0.166) on Mac OS High Sierrra no longer saves the backup to ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/. It now seems to save it to the root folder ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/ under the folder using the device ID. Something like: 91d205801440656146fc2c68f674465a12345678.

What should the symlink be in this case?

Thanks in advance!
