I can’t get  my iPad Pro 10.5 to log...

I have an iPad Pro 10.5 running iOS 11.1. When I try to log on to my iPhone 6 personal hotspot also running iOS 11.1, I get an error messag saying Remote hotspot failure Unable to start personal hotspot “Eddie’s iPhone “. I have a linux laptop that logs on to it with no problems at all.

Hi Eddie,

I understand that your iPad Pro is failing to connect to the Personal Hotspot broadcasting from your iPhone. I'd like to provide some guidance for this issue.

Please follow these steps:

If you can't connect to Personal Hotspot with Wi-Fi

On the device that you want to connect to, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and make sure that it's on. Then verify the Wi-Fi password and name of the phone. Stay on this screen until you’ve connected your other device to the Wi-Fi network. Then on the device that needs to connect to Personal Hotspot, follow these steps:

  1. Check that you're using the correct Wi-Fi network. The network name should be the same as the iOS device providing Personal Hotspot. You can check the name of your iOS device in Settings > General > About.
  2. If you see a password error when you try to join Personal Hotspot, check the Wi-Fi password: On the device that provides Personal Hotspot, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot to see the Wi-Fi password.
  3. Check how many devices are using Personal Hotspot by looking in the status bar of the device that provides Personal Hotspot. Some wireless carriers limit the number of connections you can have.
  4. On the device that needs to connect to Personal Hotspot, turn Wi-Fi off and back on.

Cheers.

Hi Brenden I was able to resolve the issue by choosing ”other” in the WiFi dialogue of the iPad and manually keying in the name of my phone, where it then let me key in the password for the hotspot. When I would make my phone visible as a hotspot, my iPad would see it and list it as an available WiFi network, but it wouldn’t open the password dialogue box. That seems like a bug in the os to me.

cheers: Eddie

I have had mine do this every now and then as well.  I have found that restarting both the phone and the iPad get it working again and after doing this, they continue to work for quite some time.

I did try restarting both devices with no luck. Even though my phone was listed as an available WiFi network, when I chose it, it wouldn’t open the password dialogue box to key in the password. I had to choose other network and manually key in the name of my phone, where it then let me key in the password. Once I did that it worked fine

Thanks for providing that followup information, Eddie. We're happy that you've found a workaround for this issue. Since this is still not completely working as expected, we recommend that you contact Apple Support as a next step.

Take care.

What I have discovered is that the iPad won’t override another network that it’s already logged on to. The workaround for that is to turn off the auto log on feature for the connection  that the iPad is connected to,turn off WiFi then restart it. Then I can choose my hotspot connection and log on to it normally
