recommendations for backup HD for my new iMac w...

I just got a new 2017 21.5 iMac with Retina 4K. It has thunderbolt 3 usb and a 512GB SSD. Looking for suggestions for an external HD to back up the OS and store docs/pics.

Hard to do better than what OWC offers. For Time Machine or Bootable clone backups most experienced users on these forums use the OWC Mercury Elite Pro series. You can find them at OWC Mercury Elite Pro: Production-Grade External Hard Drive

Also, NEVER EVER use a backup External Hard Disk to do double duty to store data and be a backup HD. HD's fail, when they do you you lose all the data on them. In other words if you are penny wise and use the External Hard Disk to do double duty when it fails you will have lost your data and it's backup. EHDs are relatively inexpensive, get at least 2, one for storage the other for backup.

Second the OWC suggestion; I also have 3 of these which can be used with or without an adapter (smaller and lighter to carry around if necessary):
