Marathon button on Nano 7th generation

My iPod Nike + tracked me at completeting my marathon at 4:43 minutes, and the entire time my Nano had me ahead by 2to 3 miles vs the markers posted along the route. The marathon tracking system colocked me at 6:06. Why the difference?
