RAM upgrade

Hi

I'm wondering whether it's worth upgrading the stock 8Gb RAM that comes with a new 2017 27" iMac.

I've been modifying large photos, making (short) 4k movies in FCPX etc. etc. and have not seen the RAM usage in the menu bar (using an app called Dr Cleaner Pro) exceed 80%. It generally hangs around 50%.

Years ago I bought expensive RAM for the first intel Mac Pro and after installing wondered why I'd spent so much for so little. It didn't seem to make much difference at all.

While RAM is nowhere near as expensive now, I would kick myself if I spent say $360 to "upgrade" and discover (again) that it didn't make  much difference.

Have any of you done it and would you like to share your experiences?

Cheers.

First I would uninstall Dr Cleaner as per the developers instructions. No anti-virus or so-called "cleaning apps are necessary or recommended for Mac OS. They tend to interfere with Mac's own built-in security. At best they use unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your system.

Check your RAM usage in Activity Monitor > Memory, especially the graph > memory pressure at the bottom. If it is green you are OK.

Upgrading RAM will not necessarily make your Mac faster, unless you are running out of memory using apps.

While 8GB RAM may be sufficient for now, you may want to upgrade to 16 GB to future-proof your Mac. Future OS systems may use more RAM and you may decide to use more RAM intensive apps. Crucial, and OWC. are both reliable vendors.
