Issues with slow computer, Photos & iTunes

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me resolve some of the issues that I have been having with my iMac the last few months. I'm not sure if the problem is because I updated the software to macOS Sierra (version 10.12.6) on an older iMac (late 2009) model, that I picked up a virus, or something to do with when I put my photos and itunes on an external hard drive last year because the hard drive was only 500 gb. Generally, I would say my computer is very slow the last few months even when using Chrome or Safari.

I do know that my iMac constantly freezes when using itunes or photos. Even transferring photos with Image Capture doesn't always work. Photos and iTunes always have to be closed and usually do not work anymore. Which, is the main thing that I do on my iMac. It's very frustrating! Please help.

Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
