Mac mail not responding

I just bought a new Macbook air and set it up using Time Machine. I am updating from 10.7.5, so a bit of a leap in terms of update.

When I started mac mail, it went into a "preparing for import" mode for over 4 hours using very little CPU (8%).

I thought it simply got stuck, so I quit and restarted the computer.

Since then, mac mail does not launch. It goes into "application not responding" mode/spinning wheel; no CPU is used.

It does launch correctly if I am logged in as a different user.

Any advise on what to do?

Follow up: I deleted the Mail library, and pasted in the same location the old, backed up Mail folders.

Then I restarted Mac mail, and it went on "preparing to import messages" mode, for 12 hours... It's still stuck.

The old Mail foders are pretty big, around 70G of folders. Is there a limit on the size of folders that Mail can manage?

I have the same symptoms.

Bought  new MacBookPro, recovered users from TimeMachine, now Mail is stuck.

Hi M_T_P_A

my issue was due to the fact that some of my libraries were too large and probably too old.

So I just deleted the Mail library, restarted Mail, and synchronized my accounts.

Then I manually imported a few of the libraries I cared about  from a backup copy (File>Import mailboxes).

This worked. Good luck.

thanks for the tip, I had the same issue and only this helped!

Yes, I dumped my Library Mail folder and just re-sycned 57k e-mail with gmail.

All happy now.

Thanks.

I had the same problem after restoring my High-Sierra via TimeMachine. The culprit was the gmail-folder. Try to find your gmail-folder inside of ~/Library/Mail/V5/ and its one with the long numbers (open it to see if gmail is inside).

Delete it and start Mail.
