saving the folder's organization in Mail mailboxes

Hi

I recently lost 100% of my messages stored in four different gmail accounts in Apple Mail.

With insights from the community, I could retrieve my messages from my Time Machine back up.

However, my organization of multiple folders in each mailbox has been lost and I must file again some 15 years of classification.

My question is then: as Time Machine seems to save the content but not the containers (nor the links between content & containers), does anyone have any idea on how this could be done ?

As much as I love Mail, I cannot afford another disaster like this one and will need to find another client which could do it if Apple does not have a reliable solution.

Thanks for any advice.

Have you considered using On My Mac folders for organization instead of sub folders in the inbox?

It is actually what I have been using (I guess...) as my folders are Smart Folders just like On My Mac.

This On My Mac folder is actually the one which Mail used when I imported my files from the V4 folder, so I don't know if it would make any difference to have all my folders and subfolders within that main Mailbox. Easy enough to do anyway so I will try it as soon as I am done refiling everything.

Thanks for the tip

Gérald

You are welcome. Smart folders require the e-mails to be in the inbox folder. On My Mac folders require that you copy the e-mail to the folder, but if the e-mail is then deleted from the inbox, the e-mail remains in the On My Mac folder.

As per this article How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

Back up using Time Machine

After you set up Time Machine, it automatically makes hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for all previous months. The oldest backups are deleted when your backup disk is full.

You can enter in user library > mail > copy and paste mails in V5 folder ( for Mac OS High Sierra )  and after that transfer V5 folder either to your desktop on in an Usb stick to save the data .

That is exactly what I did, but Mail still loses the whole subfolder organization.

It actually keeps the subfolders themselves but they are left empty and all recovered messages are just stored in the Inboxes including thousands of messages which had been deleted but where copied from the Archives...

You may find the whole story in that thread: Problem with Mail: lost all messages from every Gmail account accessed through mail, other mail accounts left untouched.

I tried two methods:

a) copy and paste of the whole Mail folder from Time Machine

b) from Mail/Import Mailboxes/files in mbox format and importing only the V4 folder

unfortunately I got the exact same result.

Pretty lame.

It depends upon the internet service provider to store 15 years old mails ( generally they don't keep it ) .

And in user library > mail > V5 is a major folder ( entire mail data is saved ) .
