Late 2015 27" Core I7 suddenly Shuts down

I bought a 27" , Retina display, core I7 8GB Ram IMAC in January 2016.

I used it experiencing no problems until June of 2017.

While learning how to create a picture in picture in a multi cam edit in FCPX , it instantly, suddenly powered itself off.

I could not power back on unless I unplugged the power cord from the outlet and then plugged it back in after a 5 second wait.

The problem recurrance gradually grew sooner and sooner as time went on untill it would die seconds after the last restart.

Leaving the IMac off all night would "sort of" fix the problem for a short while, maybe minutes or maybe hours, but would eventually die again, recurring sooner and sooner as time past on.

=============================================================================

First Action:

I took the IMac into an Apple store in Palo Alto Ca for "Repair". They did no repair of any kind. They said it was an environment problem and sent me home. Of course, it failed again. Thinking maybe they were right about it being an environment problem, I took the IMac to my daughters appartment. It failed there too, however, it lasted significantly longer before failing.

MY Diagnosis:

It then suddenly dawned on me, there was a deffinite common thread going on. TEMPERATURE !!!

At my home, in my den with other computers (an old 2009 IMAC for one), UPS power supply, track lighting, etc.....

the temperature is always around 75 to 78 df. At the Palo Alto Apple store, the temperature there (although not actully measured) was absolutley no higher than 66 df. At my daughters appartment, id say the temperature was around 70 df. I had an episode of no failure at my house for a few hours where I had the track lighting off, windows open, all other un necessary equipment off. I did this all to remove electrical noise and electrical interference. What I did not realize is that I was making it cooler For the IMac.

================================================================================ ===

Second Action:

I then took the IMac to the Apple store at Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton ca.

The tech there right away decided to replace the logic board (the only componets are the logic board, power supply and hard drive).

Result:

The IMac worked for 6 weeks with no problem in my "Hot" den at my home and then died again with the same exact symptoms , same frequency of failure.

====================================================================

Third Action:

Back to the Stoneridge Apple store, they were able to reproduce the sudden shutdowns. This time they replaced the power supply and airport card, as per Apple's high level support techs.

I took the IMac home (with great expectations.....NOT) and guess what, same problem the very next day.

===========================================================================

Fourth Action:

Took IMac back to the same Apple store. At this point they decided to give me a new IMac.

Two week wait for the new IMac, at this writing, I have another week to wait. Downside to this problem is now, I need USB 3C to Thunderbolt adapter cables to use the existing Thunderbolt devices that I still need. $50.00 per cable is not cheap.

==========================================================================

Epilog:

I have no expectations for this "New" IMac. I will have to have absolutely no problems for a least a year or more before I am convinced to retract what I used to say many years ago "RUN, dont walk away from Apple computers"

I used to say that in the ealy days of PC's untill 2005 when I bought a G5 Power PC with Final Cut Pro version 3.

Now, mybe I will be going full circle on this mantra.

Right off the bat, so to speak, the 27", retina display , Intel Cor I7 IMac just cant seem to be beat. I dont want to go to anything else. My first experience in video editing on a PC was a nightmare. The fist Power PC and the the first IMac was an experience from heaven, absolutely no crashes, lock up, freezing, or any othe rmaladys.

I will be updating this post with my experience using the new IMac.

I am curious to see if anybody else is experiencing this same issue, especially with an intel I7
