Stolen 2017 MacBook Pro

My sons MacBook was stolen monday night. We have tracked it but it hasn’t been online since. It was locked with his fingerprint. Can someone still get in to the computer and connect to the internet so it will show us the location? What’s the really chances of us ever getting this back???

Hey! Thanks for reaching out. The person can only connect to the internet if he has the password of the computer. If you want to find it, I would recommend following the link below as it is really precise and helpful!

If your Mac is lost or stolen - Apple Support

I’ve done all that. Can I remove the password remotely so they can log into it ? Find my Mac is worthless if they can’t get into the computer.

Find My Mac creates a guest account on the computer. If you enabled Find my Mac, then they should be able to log in to that account.

The thief can get into his computer? I want the person who stole it to be able to get in so it will show us a location.

Unfortunately no you can't do that. Another option you could do is putting your device in lock mode. You can learn more in the link below. You could display a message on the screen of the mac so it can be given back. Unfortunately, you can't track your mac in lost mode. Your best bet would be to report your lost or stolen Mac to local law enforcement so they can search for it. They might request the serial number of your computer. You can find this information on the original box or receipt you received when you purchased your Mac.

iCloud: Lock and track your device using Lost Mode

I’m completely confused. You CANT track the Mac in lost mode?

No you can't. As stated on Apple's website:

Note: You can’t use Lost Mode to track a Mac or iOS 5 device.

Lock mode is useful if you want to lock your mac so the thief can't steal any information inside the machine.

Every account on a Mac is completely separate and protected from every other Account.

Logging in with Guest provides NO Access to any files that belong to any other User, including the Mac owner.

Apple thought this through, you do not have to second guess anything. Just keep checking from time-to-time to see if whoever has this MacBook tries to log on, and it will tell you where.

But should I have it locked thru the find my Mac or not if I ever want it found?
