Folders suddenly only on icloud after sierra up...

Updated my air laptop to sierra.  Suddenly, the few folders I did have on the desktop have the little Icloud icon with the download arrow.  So seriously?  The update has forced my files from my laptop to the cloud?  So I spent 30 minutes this AM downloading the files.  Then I go and uncheck the box for desktop folders in the icloud preference pane, which asks if I want to keep a copy.  I say yes.  Suddenly, the folders are completely gone and the items in the folders are in random order on my hard disk (they were video files arranged by event).
