OS 11 and Incompatible Apps

I am disgusted that there was no warning that user should check out OS11 for incompatibility issue before downloading. I have several apps containing saved information that I ca no longer access. When told to contact the app developer I find that there is no way to contact them. One app I paid a large for! Digital purchases constantly leave you empty handed. The digital world is in dire need of regulation as it is not a sustainable format of media or technology. And I find it loathsomely frustrating that we allow this constant built in obsolescence to continue unchecked.

You are not addressing Apple here. This is a user to  user support forum, and Apple does not participate here.

Apple provided information in their release of iOS 11 information before the update was released. The phone also provided information in the update area about apps that would not be compatible with the new iOS in the Settings area, as well as when the apps were launched. The app developers were information a long time ago about the update and the need to update their apps, and if they failed to do that, it is on them. If a search of the app name does not reveal a method to contact the app developer, then they have probably stopped making or supporting the app.

If you wish to share your thoughts with Apple, then use their feedback page here, https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Yes, I am aware that this is a user to user post. Thanks for your information, but I am certain I am not the only one that did not “understand” how gross a change this OS would be before updating. It has only been since the advent of digital obsolescence that the “buyers” have had to take on such “monitoring as a part time job” of all our gear. Rather than customer service, we become obligated to spend our valuable time doing their work so that they can spend time making our purchase obsolete within the next month. This is not sustainable and a discussion of these policies detractors should begin.

I don't imagine that you are the only one. However, since these are 3rd party apps that you are experiencing issues with, I'm not sure why you believe that Apple customer service has failed. The app developer is the one that has caused your issue for failure to provide their users with the updated app to work with the operating system. I'm also not sure why you believe this to be the advent of digital obsolescence. You are not forced to update your device. You make the choice to do so, and need to have done your "homework" before doing so, including the determination if your app will work. If this is something that you used on a regular basis, I can guarantee that you saw information regarding its upcoming failure to work with the updated iOS. I had one app that did this constantly until I removed all information from it after I learned it would not be updated. It also seems you are confused about your purchases becoming obsolete. That is the fault of the app developer, not Apple. All Apple does is to provide a portal for the offering of the app. They are not obligated to provide support for the app.

Uh, huh. This is the mindset that I am talking about. We could go back and forth on this forever, but I have heard your arguments over and over again. However they lack discussion in many areas such as, the fact that if you don’t update your phone will begin to work more slowly or not work at all. Tell me, is this not reason to feel forced into updating? I am asking for those who are sick of this type of unchecked technological greed to express there views here. I am also asking for those, like you, to consider a different viewpoint, one that is rarely allowed a voice. My loss of money and information is not my fault alone, neither is it Apple’s, nor the 3rd party developer. It is all our faults, complicit as we are in this technological subterfuge.

It is your gear, it is your responsibility to monitor it and keep it functioning.  Does your car manufacturer call you up and tell you you need to put gas in your car?  Or that it needs an oil change?

Your car manufacturer offers you a light telling you your car needs gas, or an oil change, but it still up to you to go and do it.

Same thing here, Apple notified you that the apps would no longer work on iOS 11 since iOS 9, and even offered a list of Apps in Settings->General->About->Applications in iOS 10 that would no longer run on iOS 11 if they were not updated.

What more do you want Apple to do?  They are not going to call you up and tell you  your Apps are not going to work, and its not their responsibility to nag the app developers to keep the apps updated.

This is not a discussion page. This is a user-based technical support forum. If you wish to debate this issue, you need to find another venue for that. You ask me to understand a different viewpoint, however you don't want to. Not updating your phone is not going to make it work more slowly, nor is it going to stop working at all. You are subscribing to the thought of planned obsolescence, and that has been proven just lately to be a false assumption.

Either way, whether you wish to debate this with others is not germane to your issue, since it is the fault of the developer that your app no longer works. Debate will not change that, nor will it make the application work again. Have a nice day,.
