Security Issue/Reformat

I'm helping my dad with his Macbook Pro with El Capitan. He uses this old email address, and it wouldn't accept his password, so I tried to reset it for him. I got on a chat with someone with AT&T (his internet provider) who remotely accessed the computer and said he had security issues relating to something like "input ports," and they wanted to sell me a support plan for $300. The computer is only for internet. I asked if I could just reformat the HD and reinstall the OS and start new, and they told me the input ports wouldn't be affected.

Are there any issues that could remain after zeroing out the HD and reinstalling the OS, or is there something in hardware or firmware that could be an issue?

Hi,

I have no idea what the deal is with "input ports." Yes, issues will remain after erasing and installing the OS if there is a hardware problem. Erasing/installing is a good way to determine if the issue is hardware or OS related.

Sounds dodgy, I wouldn't generally allow an unknown person to remotely access my computer, who know what they are doing or installing. "input ports" sounds like rubbish. And you definitely should not pay $300 for support. That's ridiculous.

Reinstalling and starting from scratch again is a good idea.

He's probably got a bonus when he sells one of those plans...

There ways to scan your mac and programs to see if any thing is trying to get out or in thats not suppose to.

I wouldn't worry - just turn on your firewall and relax with the last updates you got.

Keep your browsers updated as well.

If you want to be really cautious - yes then format and reinstall the OS.

ANY problems left over will be either hardware OR a MAC os problem they have not addressed in updates.

There apps like little snitch that monitor ports in or out and you can buy some other ones that get more detail but are more complicated or just trust the built in firewall of macosx.
