what are my options to repair OS

I have the imac 27, I am running El Capitan, for some strange reason my disk utlility app is missing, At the same time when I go to About my mac, the information doesn't show up as it should. Someone was nice enough to suggest I download OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update  I down loaded it and went to install it, but got a message that my OS would not work with that update  I know there is someway I can use the disk utllity to maybe help this problem and also I remember if you hold some keys down when staring up, you can recover or somehow re install the OS   any answers would be appreciated

The Combo Update should work if you are running any version of El Capitan, if shouldn't matter it you installed it before. It should replace any system files that are damaged or missing.

If you can't do that try starting up in Recovery Mode and re-installing Mac OS. This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect your own files. That said you should always have a backup, as anything can happen at any time.
