transfer music from iTunes 12.5 to iPhone 8 iOS 11

I recently bought an iPhone 8, updated to iOS 11 and tried transferring music from my Mac via iTunes 12.7

I have never downloaded music from the iTunes store, I manually transfer music from my cds to iTunes and then transfer songs or albums to my iPhone/iPads. Now, I try to do the same with lousy results. I right-click on the song/songs I want to transfer and select Add To Device>my devise. Some files transfer, albeit MUCH slower than in the past, but some will remain greyed out with the dotted circle. I try deleting the offending track and retrying and usually will be left without that track. This happens when transferring individual songs or entire albums - the same album will transfer some, but not all. Anyone know what I need to do to correct this?

Thanks - I have tried searching here in the forums and on the net and other than suggesting any trans to solve the problem, the info I get is usually pre-8 and/or pre iTunes 12.7
