External Hard

When trying to boot my computer with an external hard-drive plugged in, it stays at a white screen forever. The second I unplug it everything works again. I'm trying to install windows 10, so I need to boot from it. I've tried holding at boot with the hard-drive unplugged to select it from the boot menu, but the second I plug it in it freezes, going back to normal if unplugged. Help would be greatly appreciated.
