Small images within notes don’t print

Has anyone tried to convert large images into small images within notes and then try to print them? Seemed to work fine for me in iOS 10 but now in iOS 11.1.1 it seems to just put a square box around my images should I want to print. If I decide to go with the large images instead it works fine but then prints the image as an entire 8.5x11 sheet of paper. I consider that a waste. Any advice greatly appreciated.
