My iPhone won't charge in my macbook air

When trying to charge my iPhone 5s in my macbook air it just connects and disconnects all the time. It's like the macbook can't recognize it for longer then half a second. When connecting my external harddrive i noticed that the same problem occures but not at the same rate. The external hard drive can be connected for a couple of minutes before disconnecting. Charging the macbook works okay but noticed the other day that it suddenly stopped charging. But the iPhone is the biggest problem. The charger works just fine when connected to the wall so I'm quite sure the problem is with the computer. I think the way to solve it is to reset the SMC but wanted to check here first to see if someone has another solution before doing so. Anyone else had this problem?

(All devices has the lates OS and iOS)

You need to use the charger that came with your iPhone. The USB ports do not provide sufficient power to charge the phone.

I'm using the charger that came with the phone. Only have apple-developed chargers so that's not the issue It has worked perfectly before, this problem occured like two months ago.

Why haven't you taken it to an Apple vendor to see about getting it fixed? Why have you waited two months?

Because I can still charge my phone in the wall so the problem i have is just irritating. The computer still works, it's just with the phone that the problem occurres often. As I said, I can still charge the computer, only had a problem with it once in two years. And if I can fix it by resetting smc, why should I take 2 hours to go to nearest Apple Store to have them say "reset smc and problem is solved"?? If you don't have any answers to my question about resetting smc, why are you here?

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

This will not fix the problem of why your phone doesn't charge. But then, I'm not longer here.

I just saw this because I began having this issue, but for anyone after me looking for answers, I fixed my issue my taking the ends of a tooth brush and (bare with me) lightly rubbing it into the ports on my laptop to get rid of all the excess lint built up and it works perfectly fine.
