Grey Screen of death

Hello, I have a 2010 macbook pro and got the grey screen of death. We have performed everything we could find including comand alt p r. We were able to get the loading bar to load all the way but we got to a black screen where you can see the mouse but can not do anything. Has anyone else had this? and if so were you able to bring it to the apple store and get it to be fixed without losing anything?

you might be able to run recovery from a bootable thumb drive, but that would only be a band aid fix. I would just take the hard drive out and back up whatever files I need to, then reformat and fresh install OS X.
