iPod screen broken?

Over the last year or so I would need to turn my iPod nano on and off at least once when trying to play music.  Recently it seemed to get regularly stuck on the screen that wants you to to choose what to focus on (Genius playlists, artists, albums or songs) and would not let me choose anything.  Today I spent two straight hours at the gym and I could NOT get the screen to even respond by playing a song!  Is the screen broken forever?
