Why are my iCloud photos being saved in One Drive?

When I take photos with my iPhone, they automatically save to iCloud.  This is a good thing.

I have purchased additional (50G) iCloud space for the convenience.

I have 5G of One Drive space that comes with Microsoft products.

I fail to understand why all my iCloud photos are also getting stored in One Drive.  I don't seem to have any control of the replication of all my photos in One Drive and One Drive is always complaining that it doesn't have enough space.

How can I prevent One Drive from saving my iPhone photos???

Do you have the OnDrive app on your phone with Camera Upload turned on? If so, turn that off. See: Use OneDrive on iOS - OneDrive

From what I can tell, there is no OneDrive app on my phone.  The photos from the phone are being loaded to the iCloud as I can view them all in a browser.  I just can't get the iCloud app on my PC to sync other than thru OneDrive.

I'm confused. Your original post made no mention of a PC. If by "iCloud app on my PC" you mean "iCloud for Windows" note that iCloud for Windows has absolutely no connection with or access to OneDrive.

One guess is that you have iCloud for Windows set to sync your photos from iCloud to your PC and that you have OneDrive set to sync the folder that your photos are in to OneDrive. I apologize for generating confusion.  I had selected Windows 10 in my post. I thought that might help explain the source of my issue.  As usual, we are given categories for our selection that don't match our requirements, or the way "we" might like to describe things.  And I'm sort of a newbie to iCloud and don't have the full glossary of terms at my disposal.

I haven't dug deeply into your suggestion yet, but I can tell you from my PC when I go into the iCloud folder in my C root, I tell it to download files (button near the top on the far left) and it brings up a selection of folders to sync.  I select them all, then "Download".  I repeat this process and all my choices are deselected when I look at it again...  Very frustrating.

No error reporting...  Just lets me do it over and over without any explaination.   I'm guessing this is the case since I selected in OneDrive that it wasn't to sync those folders.  I don't seem to have any control or means to "point" the iCloud folder to my on-line content.  It all seems to take place in the background and I have no say in to which account it looks.  No tools or settings available for setup in the iCloud app... (on the PC).  No instructions either.  Only these forums.

BTW...  "Absolutely no access to OneDrive"...  That would be great!  I don't want it!  Problem is: when I first loaded up iCloud for Windows, it somehow got berried into my OneDrive folder.  I didn't tell it to go there, it did it all on it's own.

I guess that is my whole problem...

When you set up iCloud for Windows it creates a folder named iCloud Photos as described in Set up and use iCloud for Windows - Apple Support

The problem you are having is with OneDrive, not iCloud. You need to get help with OneDrive. Based on the normal location of the iCloud Photos folder I suspect that your entire user account on your PC is set to sync with OneDrive -- but that is just a guess. The following has information about how to change the location where your photos from iCloud download to your PC (iCloud: Use iCloud Photo Library on your Windows computer) -- but please note that I am NOT recommending that; I recommend that before you even consider that, you should understand how you have OneDrive set up and then change what is syncing via OneDrive settings. It's not how "I've" set up OneDrive.  That happened automatically when I installed Office.  I have half a mind to uninstall OneDrive so it won't commandeer iCloud.   Un-install both, then reinstall iCloud for windose.  Because I don't seem to have any control over the iCloud installation, it got burried into OneDrive which in my mind is really stupid.  Why buy space on iCloud and have it duplicated in OneDrive where I would have to buy it again? 

I have not been able to get iCloud for Windose to sync since I killed the photo sync in OneDrive.

Just to bring you up to date and thank you for your support.

I disabled OnDrive, then un-installed and reinstalled iCloud for windows.  It took a while (of course), but eventually it downloaded everything I requested to my PC and now it seems to be synced up just fine.  The iCloud folder is NOT in my OneDrive folder anymore! (yea!)

If you have a windows 10 computer and you set it up to keep all of your documents in OneDrive, that includes the pictures folder. iCloud photos on a windows computer will create a folder in your photos folder for iCloud Photos, under which is a download and upload folder.

Depending on the order you did the setup, it is possible for your iCloud Photos folder to end up synchronizing to your OneDrive (this may be a good thing, because all of your photos will be backed up).

If this is the case, simply go into the OneDrive settings on the Mac, and disable syncing that folder to your Mac.

If you prefer them to not be backed-up to OneDrive at all, go into iCloud settings on the PC and move the iCloud Photos folder to a non-synched folder, such as your root user folder (usually C:/Users/{your user name}/).
