itunes 12 freezes when I scroll in genre pane

Hi guys.

I've got this really annoying problem, when I scroll through my genres in itunes 12, it freezes. The song will keep playing, but everything else is either not functioning or REALLY sluggish. Sometimes, the pane with the genres catches up with the scrolling, but after that everything is really f'd up.

I noticed that it happens especially, when I switch repeatedly between scrolling in the pane on the very left, with all the playlists, and the middle pane to select a different genre. I think the problem started when I upgraded to itunes 12, but I'm not sure. Plus my song collection is rather large: 90 GB.

When I force quite itunes and restart it, the problem is fixed - for a while.

My system is an iMac from mid '11 with an i5 intel chip and 12 GB of RAM. I run Mavericks, 10.9.5. I've got an usb hub, a soundcard and a couple of external harddisks connected at all times.
