Can I add SSD to my old iMac 2011 27" but keep ...

Feeling my old iMac 2011 is getting slow now. I would like add a new ssd into it but keep old hdd and dvd rom, is it possible?? Or does apple store can do it?? Thank you for your help in advance.

Yes, but it's very difficult and in my opinion not worth the effort. iMac super drives are prone to failure because of their incorrect vertical installation and the excessive heat generated by other components, I believe it's best to remove it and replace it with an SSD. If you really want to get into adding a second drive while keeping the super drive in place here are instructions Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Hard Drive Kit - iFixit

FWIW I replaced my optical drive with and SSD from OWC and installed the optical in an inexpensive USB enclosure and I've been very happy with it.

There is another alternative without ever having to

literally pry open you iMac.

The 2011 iMacs have a Thunderbolt interface.  You can get

a Thunderbolt enclosure and install an SSD in it and use it

as your boot drive and turn the internal HDD into a clone

backup.

It will end up being nearly as fast as if it was installed internal

and will support TRIM.  The enclosures are a bit pricey but damaging

your screen when trying to install an internal will be even more pricey.

If you do decide to get it installed internal, Apple Stores won't do it but

an authorized Apple service center may.  Be aware, that they charges

for making that installation could end up costing almost as much as

a Thunderbolt enclosure (labor isn't cheap).

Yes, you are right. Installing ssd is too complicated for me. I dont believe i can install the ssd without damage my old imac.

How much is the Thunderbolt enclosure??? Is it high costing??? Another question, how is the performance for ext ssd compre with internal???

On paper they are the same, in reality the external is at least 90% as fast as an internal. Much faster than an internal HDD.

iMac 2011 should be thunderbolt 1, right?? If the performance is nearly the same as inernal ssd, it is a great news for me. Thank you for all of yours warm reply.

But how much for external ssd case by using thunderbolt enclosure???

TB1 transfers data at 10 gb/s, the internal bus manages 6 gb/s, so on paper the external is faster, but there is more overhead involved with the external, you will get about 6 gb/s (give or take a bit) so it will seem to be as fast as the internal bus.

No idea how much the external case will cost, you can look for yourself, OWC is a reliable vendor of good external cases.
