Macbook Pro 2017 battery not charging

My husband's MacBook Pro (2017 13-inch with touch bar) unexpectedly went black this morning for no apparent reason. It was connected to power at the time. After shutting down, the computer made the battery-charging chime a couple times, but the screen was black and nothing happened when I pushed the power button. I did an SMC reset, then held down the power button a few seconds and got it to come back on while connected to power. The moment I disconnect power, the computer shuts off (I did this switching the power cord to different USB-C ports to see if it made a difference).

The battery icon shows a 0% charge and says: "Condition: Replace Now" and "Battery is Not Charging." We've made an Genius Bar appointment, but this is rather troubling for a new computer, which he's only had 3 months. He almost always uses the computer connected to power, since he uses it at home almost exclusively. Last week, we were on vacation, and he used the computer on battery power for maybe an hour, but otherwise the only time it's been disconnected from power is when he moves it from one room to another.

Additional specs: macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB memory, 500 GB storage.

Interestingly, my MacBook Pro (2016 13-inch touch bar) experienced a similar problem just last month. It went black one morning for no apparent reason, also when connected to power. I got mine to come back on, and saw that the battery charge was 0% and also "Battery Is Not Charging," although mine did not say "Condition: Replace Now." Further, my husband's computer seems to be running fine while connected to power, while my computer died a few seconds after I was able to get it back on and never came back on again. I took it to a Genius Bar and they sent it away for hardware replacements.

Anybody know what's going on? I'm concerned that something similar has happened to both of our computers. Apple didn't provide much detail about what they did to fix my computer, other than the battery and I think the CPU were replaced (I don't have the paperwork anymore). The hard drive was also wiped.
