Why do I get "Disk Not Ejected Properly" messag...

I get this message a lot, what can I do to stop it?

Discs (A.K.A. USB drives or other storage devices) should always be ejected before disconnecting from your Mac. This is done so that the computer can unroute the drive from the computer memory without suddenly breaking the connection. Sudden disconnections like this could potentially damage the drive and/or your computer, and is prone to data loss.

How to properly eject your drives:

Right click on the drive icon and select eject/move to trash.

(Or) Drag and drop the drive icon into the trash can located on the far right of your task bar.

An external drive has been disconnected without having first been ejected.

Maybe I wasn't clear, this happens even though the drive is still connected, it happens randomly. It has nothing to do with a physical disconnect!

It could be a faulty connection, in your cable or inside the hard drive. Try a different cable.

thanks, I am very aware of that, in this case I do nothing and the disk appears to be still connected, but the message comes up regularly.

An SMC Reset has been known to fix that problem: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.

Running Sierra 10.12.4 and having this problem with an External Seagate Drive.  Resetting the SMC does not cure the problem.  It is happening on two different iMacs with two different drives since Sierra was installed.

For me this issue surfaced only with recent Sierra builds: bunch of messages about improper disconnects for disks that are still mounted and working fine.

Seems to be a bug. Please report to Apple.

Just letting you know I am having this same issue. Usb thumb drives just randomly ejecting themselves. Then the message appears that the "disk was improperly ejected". This started with macOS 10.12.4. It has happened about four times this week. I  submitted a bug report to Apple.

I have been having this problem constantly for years!

I tend to get this message constantly... even after I put the computer to s;eep

Over night I get at least 10 messages telling me the disk was not ejected correctly.

I've spoken to Apple support over the phone and didn't solve the problem.

I have this issue now every time my iMac wakes from sleep. Didn't have this problem until I upgraded to Sierra. I don't want to Eject the disk since it is my Time Machine backup drive. Popups are annoying but I hope don't really indicate a problem - I have unchecked the Power Nap option so Time Machine should not be trying to use it while Mac is sleeping.
