La Cie Porsche Design disk not opening

I recently bought another LacCie drive for back up purposes and was told in the Apple shop to take this particular drive as my MacBook Pro does not run USB3. However, my main machine to which I tried to connect it to runs macOS Sierra 10.12.3 which can run USB 2 and USB 3 but the disk just does not boot up. Tried LaCie disk manager but that too says there is no disk! I have thrown away the original packing!  What can I do? I have restarted the system three times and it just will not boot up.
